Mark was born in 1966 and spent much of his childhood at the family home near Mullingar in Co. Westmeath. He holds an MA degree in History of Art from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.

He joined Sotheby's in 1989, and spent eleven years in the Modern British and Irish art department: by the time he left the company in 2000 he was a senior specialist, and a director of Sotheby's Europe.

While at Sotheby's, he organised the first international auction of Irish art. This was the first time that Irish painting and furniture had been sold outside Ireland itself, and the sale was exhibited in New York and Boston prior to auction. It was an extraordinary success, and marked the beginning of the modern market in Irish art. Mark continued as Sotheby's specialist in charge of Irish art and ran the annual Irish Sale for the next six years.

In 2000, he joined the London dealers Agnew's as Director of Contemporary Art, working in particular with the artist Louis le Brocquy. He left in March 2002 to start Mark Adams Fine Art.

Mark lectures widely on Irish art, and writes for various periodicals.
